Xperience9

The Xperience9 (Slipstream to Upstream) ended in March 2008. During the project's last year of delivery it received funding to continue its good work through the ESF/LSC (STU) programme managed by Connexions West Yorkshire.

The aim of STU was to engage and support young people aged 16 – 18 who were NEET to complete an innovative 12 week programme comprising training to support learners to develop basic, key and life skills, work experience, and volunteering opportunities.

Between January 2007 and February 2008, 115 young people participated in the Xperience 9 programme. Learners were given the chance to access exciting and stimulating personal development opportunities. For example: environmental art, angling with the Environment Agency; dry stone walling with BTCV Hollybush; filmmaking with Lifeforce Productions and gaining accreditation through the Arts Awards, and animation workshops.

60% of participants engaged positively on the programme completing 4 to 16 weeks (length of experience depended on individual needs and interests). 49% of participants progressed into employment or onto further education, Entry to Employment (E2E), apprenticeships, Activity Agreements, voluntary work placements, and accredited learning.

"Volunteering is important to me because I enjoy working with people in the community while gaining benefits such as confidence, communication skills and having new experiences."
Phil, aged 18

"Throughout that time the support the X9 team have provided the young people and us with has been invaluable."
