REEMAP
(Raising Educational Ethnic Minority Achievement Partnership)
was set up to raise the educational achievement of black
and minority ethnic (BME) children and young people in Leeds.
Educational
inequality in the city has existed for more than half a century,
with pupils from Black Caribbean, Black African, Bangladeshi
and Pakistani origins lagging behind their white counterparts
at all key educational stages.
REEMAP
acts as a network organisation to make a marked and measurable
improvement in the educational achievement of its young "clients".
Learning Partnerships provides secretariat support.
Chairman
Clinton Cameron said: "The educational performance of
some pupils from black and ethnic minority communities is
so atrocious that something had to be done. We hope to achieve
a dramatic improvement in pupil performance within five years."
That
under performance is put down to a number of reasons, such
as:
· Low expectations by teachers
· Institutional racism
· Lack of support at home and in the community
· Aspirations of pupils and negative peer group pressure
REEMAP
aims to boost the self-esteem and exam results of young BME
people through extra support in the classroom and out-of-school
activities.
Solat
Chaudhry, secretary of REEMAP and chief executive of Learning
Partnerships, said: "There were many individual organisations
in Leeds working towards the promotion of education and learning.
"REEMAP
is a network which combines the efforts of these organisations
for the good of all pupils."
Schools,
colleges and community organisations throughout the city of
Leeds are being encouraged to refer young people who they
feel would benefit from the service.
