Skillzone
provides tuition in basic skills to small groups and individuals
whose needs are not met by traditional adult education classes.
Courses
are held in community centres or the student's home. The
aim of Skillzone is to encourage students, once they have gained
confidence, to continue their studies through more formal courses.
Skillzone
specialises in developing and piloting programmes based on local
need, which are then incorporated into the syllabus of mainstream
education providers.
Get
Crafty with literacy and numeracy teaches letters, words,
numbers and comprehension by instructing students how to make
simple crafts, such as alphabet books, birthday cards and
calendars. Students can then make the crafts at home with their
children encouraging the use of the English language.
English at Home is an opportunity for the tutors to work in
the homes of students whose lives are isolated due to cultural,
language and disability difficulties. These sessions focus on
everyday English used for shopping, visits to the hospital and
parent evenings. One of the courses take place at the Yan Kong
centre and they have written this book during an 'Improve Your
English' course. They hope it will be useful to other ESOL students.
Improve your English book.
English
for Driving was a pilot run by Skillzone which has now been
added to the prospectus of Thomas Danby College. It helps students
to pass the first part of their driving test - the theory. The
course teaches the women different parts of the car and what they
do, understand road signs and fill in the application form for
the theory test.

Glasses
for Women is a resource pack available to all Skillzone courses,
containing reading glasses and an information sheet. It addresses
the learning barrier of not being able to see properly for reading
and writing. Students are encouraged to go to the opticians to
check for more serious eye problems.
